People come here to get away from that horror; the worry that your loved ones could be wiped out en mass because of the will of the deranged. If we are to be an imperfect beacon of light to the world, then we have to address this sickness in our society. I don’t offer a solution, nor do I think one is easily forthcoming, but I certainly hear the trumpet. It’s a call to action. I hope you hear it too.

dionthesocialist:

So, Shell is starting its ad campaign promoting its upcoming destruction of the arctic in search for more oil. Because they’re idiots, they decided to open their server to an ad contest to see who could come up with the best ad. Shell underestimated the internet, so here’s my six favorite Shell Ad Campaign Trolls.

It is also censorship when you give companies the ability to break the fundamental name resolution system of the Internet. It is already happening domestically, (see: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/12/wyden-domain-seizure/) and, for the record, will not stop true, large-scale piracy at all. Just like corporations wanted to stop the Xerox copy machine, the VCR, and the ability to make a copy of your purchased music to store on your computer, they are also using the heavy hand of industry pre-written legislation in order to block more “illegal content”. In reality, the point of this legislation is to avoid having to grow and adapt an entrenched business model. The entertainment industry wants to sell horse buggies, when the horseless carriage is already in the hands of citizens. There are logical ways to address the issue of copyright, but when the legislators want to dismiss Internet experts as “nerds” without even attempting to understand the impact of these laws, then we have a problem. (see: http://motherboard.vice.com/2011/12/16/dear-congress-it-s-no-longer-ok-to-not-know-how-the-internet-works)

gentlemensuits:

How I Met Content Scarcity

I love the television show How I Met Your Mother. I wasn’t an early viewer of the show. I knew of all the actors and the buzz about the show, but limited time means I often have to watch up on great shows after they have some staying power. When NetFlix added HIMYM to their streaming option, it was all Barney Stinson all the time. My marathon viewings were LEGEN- wait for the Diet Pepsi to pour into the glass of ice and stop fizzing while the next episode buffers-DARY.

Now that I’m caught up with all the previous seasons, I was ready to get my current season on. I just needed to watch the current season’s aired episodes. I knew it was listed on Hulu, but my Hulu Plus subscription was no help. After pointing my computer browser to Hulu.com, they provide a link to full episodes on the CBS.com web site. Score! I was able to watch episode 1 of the current Season 7, even though the placement of commercials on the web version was jarring and I had to place the laptop next to the TV to plug in an HDMI cable so I could watch on a real TV.

Ready to watch episode 2, I found it wasn’t available. The next available episode is the latest episode to air, twelve episodes later. The only way to watch the other episodes of season 7 is to pay $3 an episode via either Amazon or iTunes. That is WAY too expensive when I can pick up an entire season in DVD form on sale for about $25. So that’s it. Of course, I am about three clicks away from someone’s digital copy of the show they recorded off the air that’s available for free download, so I do have that option, but instead of that, I’d rather not watch at all.

I’m not a cable cutter. I have a rather full package of channels I’ve paid for steadily for over a decade, and I always seem to buy into the various entertainment options like satellite radio, Spotify, Blu-Ray, Hulu Plus, Roku, iTunes, Amazon, and NetFlix, but even for me some pricing is just too much and the way it’s presented is too fragmented. Instead of feeding me the content I wanted via the Internet, the network will now miss out on my current viewership of the show. This drags down the ratings and the price they can charge for those precious commercial spots. The major networks are losing out, and that’s too bad, because I am willing to pay a reasonable price for the content I want. The entertainment suits really don’t want to service their customers, and they will continue to suffer because of it.

For more on the content scarcity fallacy, read Fred Wilson’s Scarcity Is A Shitty Business Model

Goodbye Pensacola

Goodbye Pensacola

Louisiana, I am in you.

Louisiana, I am in you.

The General Lee?

The General Lee?

The Spanish Peaks, Colorado. #roadtrip

The Spanish Peaks, Colorado. #roadtrip

Let it snow

Let it snow

The realization of the I Want Pie movement. #iwantpie (Taken...

The realization of the I Want Pie movement. #iwantpie (Taken with picplz.)

Time for dinner before I hit the hay.
